Claude peak hours: when they are and what they still change

Claude's peak hours are weekdays 05:00–11:00 PT. Since 6 May 2026 they no longer shrink Claude Code sessions on Pro and Max. What still applies, by zone.

Claude's peak hours are weekdays from 05:00 to 11:00 Pacific Time, the window Anthropic announced on 26 March 2026: 12:00–18:00 UTC while the US is on daylight time, 13:00–19:00 UTC in winter. During that window the 5-hour session limit of Free, Pro and Max subscriptions runs down faster, with no announced end for chat; on 6 May 2026 Anthropic removed that reduction for Claude Code on Pro and Max. Peak hours never touched weekly limits, and nothing costs more at peak times: there is no surge pricing.

Sources: Thariq's announcement of 26 March 2026 and Anthropic's post of 6 May 2026. We checked the status on 24 September 2026: Anthropic's help center, plan and pricing pages don't mention a peak-hours adjustment, so the 05:00–11:00 PT window is the last one Anthropic published, not a guarantee.

When are Claude's peak hours in your time zone?

Anthropic set the window in US Pacific Time, so outside the US its local hours move when the US changes its clocks: in the table, the first column is US daylight time (8 March to 31 October 2026), the second US standard time (1 November 2026 to 13 March 2027). The UK and the EU change their clocks on other dates, 29 March and 25 October.

¹ One hour earlier, 12:00–18:00 in London and 13:00–19:00 in Paris, during the weeks when only the US has changed its clocks: 8 to 28 March and 25 to 31 October 2026.

Further east the window runs into the night: in India it ends at 23:30 (00:30 in winter), and in Tokyo Monday's peak runs from Monday 21:00 to Tuesday 03:00, so Friday's ends on Saturday morning. Anthropic's post said "1pm–7pm GMT": that is UK clock time for most of the year, but in UTC the window is 12:00–18:00 while the US is on daylight time.

What peak hours change, and what they don't

Anthropic announced the change in three posts by Thariq, who works on Claude Code (thread of 26 March 2026):

"During weekdays between 5am–11am PT / 1pm–7pm GMT, you'll move through your 5-hour session limits faster than before."

He added that about 7% of users "will hit session limits they wouldn't have before, particularly for pro tiers", and that "overall weekly limits stay the same, just how they're distributed across the week is changing" (same thread). Anthropic never published how much faster a session drains at peak, so any multiplier you read elsewhere is a guess.

Three things did not change:

  • Your weekly limit: the same total, per Anthropic.
  • What you pay. Subscriptions kept their price, and usage credits are billed at standard API rates whatever the hour (Manage usage credits). The phrase "surge pricing", used about this change (this page's first title included), was wrong: there is no surcharge.
  • The session length. A session still runs for five hours; only how fast it fills changed.

What it means in practice: a session can straddle the window. In London, a session opened at 11:00 runs until 16:00, and from 13:00 it is inside the peak window.

A session opened at 11:00 in London runs into the 13:00–19:00 peak window

Example: first message at 11:00 → reset at 16:00. The next message, at 17:00, opens a new window.

  • 13 to 28 March 2026: double usage off-peak. A promotion doubled five-hour usage outside 8 a.m.–2 p.m. ET (5–11 a.m. PT) on weekdays, and all weekend, for Free, Pro, Max and Team, in the Claude apps, Cowork and Claude Code. The bonus "doesn't count toward any weekly usage limits". It ended on 28 March at 11:59 p.m. PT; the first version of the page said 27 March (archived Anthropic help center page).
  • 26 March 2026: faster drain at peak. Announced while the promotion was still running, it was easy to read the two as one policy. They were separate: the promotion ended two days later; the peak adjustment did not.
  • 6 May 2026: relief for Claude Code. Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, and removed "the peak hours limit reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max accounts" (Anthropic).
  • Since then: nothing new for chat. As of 24 September 2026, Anthropic hasn't said the adjustment ended for claude.ai, Desktop or mobile, and hasn't published a new schedule. It raised five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans on 22 September 2026, with Claude Opus 5.5, without mentioning peak hours (Anthropic). The Max plan lists "Priority access at high traffic times" on claude.com/pricing.

The rest of 2026's limit changes are in Claude usage limits explained.

Is Claude busier at certain hours?

Anthropic doesn't publish its load by hour. Its Economic Index report of June 2026 shows usage follows the working week: the share of personal conversations rises from around 35% on weekdays to just under 50% on weekends, and business email drafting has a slight peak at 10–11 a.m. local time (Anthropic Economic Index: Cadences). The peak window covers the US morning and the European afternoon, the hours when both working days overlap.

How to plan around peak hours

  • On Claude Code with Pro or Max, stop planning around them. The reduction has been gone since 6 May 2026.
  • Move heavy, unattended jobs off-peak. It is Anthropic's own advice: "If you run token-intensive background jobs, shifting them to off-peak hours will stretch your session limits further" (Thariq).
  • Put your biggest chats outside the window when your day allows: before 13:00 or after 20:00 in Paris, before 17:30 in India, after 11:00 on the US West Coast, all year round.
  • Watch the session bar rather than the clock. With no current schedule for chat, what Settings > Usage shows is the only ground truth. Every place to see it is in how to check your Claude usage.
  • Check the window on your own clock. The free Claude peak hours tool shows whether it is peak time for you right now and when that changes, daylight saving included.

How UsageMeter helps

UsageMeter can't tell you whether a peak adjustment applies at a given moment: Anthropic doesn't expose that. What it does, for free, is keep your 5-hour session in the claude.ai composer with its reset time and a pace marker, so a faster drain shows up as a pace warning rather than a surprise. It is an independent extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, not affiliated with Anthropic.

FAQ

Are Claude peak hours still in effect?

For Claude Code on Pro and Max, no: Anthropic removed the peak-hours reduction on 6 May 2026. For chat on claude.ai, Claude Desktop and the mobile apps, Anthropic hasn't announced an end, and it no longer publishes a schedule. We last checked on 24 September 2026.

What time are Claude's peak hours?

Weekdays from 05:00 to 11:00 Pacific Time. For most of the year that is 08:00–14:00 in New York, 13:00–19:00 in London, 14:00–20:00 in Paris and 17:30–23:30 in India (18:30–00:30 from November to mid-March). Weekends are not peak hours.

Is Claude peak hours surge pricing?

No. Nothing is billed differently by time of day. During peak hours your 5-hour session limit runs down faster, while your subscription price, your weekly limit and the API rate of usage credits stay the same. None of Anthropic's announcements call it surge pricing.

Do peak hours affect Claude's weekly limit?

No. Anthropic said overall weekly limits stay the same and only how usage is distributed across the week changed. Your weekly limit still resets at the fixed time assigned to your account, shown in Settings > Usage under Weekly limits.

Does Claude Code have peak hours?

Not on Pro and Max since 6 May 2026, when Anthropic removed the peak-hours limit reduction for Claude Code and doubled its five-hour limits. That announcement didn't mention Team or Enterprise for the peak change, only for the doubled limits.

Was the March 2026 double-usage promotion the same thing?

No. From 13 to 28 March 2026, a promotion doubled usage outside 5–11 a.m. PT on weekdays, and all weekend, without counting toward weekly limits. The peak adjustment was a separate change, announced on 26 March, and it outlasted the promotion.
