When Claude's usage limits reset

In short

Claude's five-hour session resets about five hours after the message that opened it, and the weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time set for your account, the same every week. Settings > Usage shows both times, and nothing brings a limit back sooner except a limit reset ("Reset for free"), which Anthropic grants only occasionally.

UsageMeter is an independent tool, not affiliated with Anthropic.

Limit resetIn effect

One limit reset given to subscribers, to use whenever they choose

Pro, Max and Team subscribers can refill their five-hour session or weekly limit once with 'Reset for free' in Settings > Usage, on the web or in Claude Desktop (not in the mobile apps or Claude Code).

Effect. Anthropic said it can be applied any time until 22 October 2026; its help article adds that an unused reset expires on the day and time listed on the offer, in Settings > Usage.

The five-hour session: about five hours after your first message

The session is a rolling window, not a clock that restarts at midnight or on the hour. It opens with the first message you send while no window is running and closes about five hours later, whatever you do in between. Then nothing runs until your next message opens a new one. Anthropic does not document the exact start rule to the minute, so take the time Claude shows you:

  • Settings > Usage (paid plans): Current session shows how much you have used and the time remaining.
  • The limit message on claude.ai: "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]".
  • Claude Code: "You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm", and /usage shows each window with its reset.

The session comes back about five hours after the message that opened it

Example: first message at 10:00 → reset at 15:00. The next message, at 15:30, opens a new window. At 13:20, 1 h 40 min are left.

Example
Two 5-hour windows on one dayFirst message at 10:00: window 1 runs until 15:00. Nothing runs between 15:00 and 15:30. The 15:30 message opens window 2, which ends at 20:30.WINDOW 1 · 10:00 → 15:00WINDOW 2 · 15:30 → 20:30↺ reset 15:00nothing runs until your next message1st message → the windowstartsnow 13:20 · 1 h 40 min left08:0010:0012:0014:0016:0018:0020:0022:00dot size ≈ message sizeTwo 5-hour windows on one dayFirst message at 10:00: window 1 runs until 15:00. The weekly limit: a fixed day and time for your account

Paid plans add a weekly limit across all models. It is not a rolling seven days: it resets "at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account", and Anthropic adds that the day and time "stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins". You get your full weekly allowance each cycle. The next reset is under Weekly limits in Settings > Usage; in Claude Code the message reads like "You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am".

The week resets at a fixed time: the pace line shows whether you will get there first

Example: 58% of the weekly limit used on day 4.5 of 7. The dashed line is a steady pace to the reset (Thu 18:00).

Model ceilings reset with the week

The Fable ceiling of Max plans (up to 50% of the weekly limits) belongs to the weekly limit and comes back with it. In Claude Code, an Opus or Sonnet limit gives its own reset time in the message ("You've hit your Opus limit · resets 3:45pm") and only blocks that model family: /model to another family keeps you working meanwhile.

"Reset for free": the one way to get a limit back early

Anthropic gives limit resets "occasionally to eligible plans". When you have one:

  • it puts your five-hour session or your weekly limit back to full right away, depending on the reset shown;
  • your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time;
  • you do not have to reach a limit to use it, and once used it cannot be undone;
  • it lives in Settings > Usage, in the Resets section, on the web or in Claude Desktop: click "Reset for free", then confirm. The same button appears on the message you see at a limit;
  • it is not available in the mobile apps or in Claude Code, but the refilled limits apply everywhere;
  • it does not refund usage credits already billed, and it is lost if you downgrade or cancel first.

On 22 September 2026, with Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic gave subscribers one reset "which you can now save and use whenever you choose"; its Claude Code account added that Pro, Max and Team users can apply it "any time until Oct 22". An unused reset expires on the day and time listed on the offer, which Settings > Usage shows.

What does not bring a limit back

  • A new chat, another browser, the mobile app or Claude Desktop: every surface shares the same limits.
  • Logging out or deleting conversations: usage already counted stays counted.
  • Claude Code's automatic continue (version 2.1.234 or later): it waits in the open session and picks the task up after the reset, it does not reset anything.

To keep going before the reset, the options are usage credits (Pro, Max, and Team when enabled), another model when only a model ceiling is full, or a bigger plan.

FAQ

Why does my Claude limit reset at a different time every day?

Because the five-hour session starts with your first message. Start at 08:00 and it resets around 13:00; start at 11:00 and it resets around 16:00. The weekly limit is the one with a fixed time.

Does the weekly limit reset on the day I subscribed?

No. Anthropic assigns each account a fixed weekly reset day and time that does not depend on when you subscribed or started using Claude. Settings > Usage shows it under Weekly limits.

Can I reset my Claude limit early?

Only with a limit reset, when Anthropic has given you one: "Reset for free" in Settings > Usage, on the web or in Claude Desktop. Otherwise you can keep working on usage credits, at API rates, until the reset.

Does using "Reset for free" move my weekly reset day?

No. A limit reset refills the session or the week right away, and your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time.

Where does Claude Code show the reset time?

In the limit message itself ("resets 3:45pm", "resets Mon 12:00am"), in /usage, and to status line scripts as rate_limits.five_hour.resets_at and rate_limits.seven_day.resets_at for Pro and Max subscribers.
