When Claude's usage limits reset

The five-hour session: about five hours after your first message

The session is a rolling window, not a clock that restarts at midnight or on the hour. It opens with the first message you send while no window is running and closes about five hours later, whatever you do in between. Then nothing runs until your next message opens a new one. Anthropic does not document the exact start rule to the minute, so take the time Claude shows you:

• Settings > Usage (paid plans): Current session shows how much you have used and the time remaining.
• The limit message on claude.ai: "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]".
• Claude Code: "You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm", and /usage shows each window with its reset.

The session comes back about five hours after the message that opened it

Example: first message at 10:00 → reset at 15:00. The next message, at 15:30, opens a new window. At 13:20, 1 h 40 min are left.

The weekly limit: a fixed day and time for your account

Paid plans add a weekly limit across all models. It is not a rolling seven days: it resets "at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account", and Anthropic adds that the day and time "stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins". You get your full weekly allowance each cycle. The next reset is under Weekly limits in Settings > Usage; in Claude Code the message reads like "You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am".

Model ceilings reset with the week

The Fable ceiling of Max plans (up to 50% of the weekly limits) belongs to the weekly limit and comes back with it. In Claude Code, an Opus or Sonnet limit gives its own reset time in the message ("You've hit your Opus limit · resets 3:45pm") and only blocks that model family: /model to another family keeps you working meanwhile.

"Reset for free": the one way to get a limit back early

Anthropic gives limit resets "occasionally to eligible plans". When you have one:

• it puts your five-hour session or your weekly limit back to full right away, depending on the reset shown;
• your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time;
• you do not have to reach a limit to use it, and once used it cannot be undone;
• it lives in Settings > Usage, in the Resets section, on the web or in Claude Desktop: click "Reset for free", then confirm. The same button appears on the message you see at a limit;
• it is not available in the mobile apps or in Claude Code, but the refilled limits apply everywhere;
• it does not refund usage credits already billed, and it is lost if you downgrade or cancel first.

On 22 September 2026, with Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic gave subscribers one reset "which you can now save and use whenever you choose"; its Claude Code account added that Pro, Max and Team users can apply it "any time until Oct 22". An unused reset expires on the day and time listed on the offer, which Settings > Usage shows.

What does not bring a limit back

• A new chat, another browser, the mobile app or Claude Desktop: every surface shares the same limits.
• Logging out or deleting conversations: usage already counted stays counted.
• Claude Code's automatic continue (version 2.1.234 or later): it waits in the open session and picks the task up after the reset, it does not reset anything.

To keep going before the reset, the options are usage credits (Pro, Max, and Team when enabled), another model when only a model ceiling is full, or a bigger plan.
